Welcome to Part 2 of “Characteristics of a Woman of God.” Today, we are looking at the Titus 2 woman, the woman who leads younger women in the ways of the Lord. This woman not only teaches women of God, but is a living example of what she speaks. Her actions and behavior shine brighter than her words. It’s important to note that in the book of Titus, the instruction on how a woman of God should be were directed to the older women in the church—who were already living righteously for the Lord—to teach to the younger women so they can behave in the same way.
In modern times, such teaching can be done in the form of small group Bible studies (at home, school campus, women’s ministries, etc.) and also mentoring younger women.
Here are the characteristics that stood out to me while reading Titus 2:3-5:
“The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”
Spiritual Teachers. This woman is a spiritual teacher and guide for young women of God. She loves to let God use her to be a light for them. She utilizes the wisdom gained over the years for her teaching. And of course she teaches the Word of God to birth a generation of true women of God.
Sober. This woman of God truly honors her body as it is a temple of God. She is careful not to overindulge and become drunk with wine. She is sober minded, meaning that she thinks soberly and purely hence her sober behavior. She gracefully leads this example while teaching the younger women of God to behave the same way.
Discreet. She is mindful of others, their feelings, and her words. She guards her toungue and is careful not to offend anyone with her words or actions. In fact, she stays aware of her words and actions to make sure they glorify God and teaches the younger women to be the same.
Chaste. She is pure and disciplined. She knows how important it is to save oneself until marriage. She does not believe in sexual intercourse before marriage because it does not glorify God. She does not hesitate to instill this in her students.
Homekeepers. As I’ve aforementioned in Part 1, it is the woman’s job to keep the house in great shape—practically. She performs the house duties such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, decorations, etc. It is wise for the Titus 2 woman to train younger women in such a way as it is an important task for a woman to perform. As women of God, we are instructed to take on such a responsibility.
Obedient. She is submissive to God, authority, and to her husband. A woman should never rule over other men, especially hers.
Loving. She loves and she cares. The Titus 2 woman, who is very loving of her husband, teaches other women of God to deeply love their husbands with the love of God so that their marriage stays strong. Not only does she love of her husband, but she loves everyone around her.
Well-behaved in the eyes of the Lord. What more can I say here? This lovely woman of God is fully devoted to the Lord. Surely, dies to herself daily and lives a life that glorifies God. In order for this Titus 2 woman to be a great teacher and leader for other women, she must be an even better student by consistently learning from the greatest (God!). She must live what she preaches, thereby sparking a generation of women of God who are true worshippers and will be equipped to lead other women in His truth even when they get older.
