Scripture: Philippians 3:12-21
As true believers, what should be our main desires in this life? Are we trying to gain wealth, popularity, and material gain just like everyone else or are our eyes glued to the goal of getting into Heaven and living with our Savior for eternity?
It should be the latter. If you are the one who chases after worldly things, you need to reevaluate your relationship with Christ. This post is for you!
There are sooo many Christians who claim to love and worship God but are still obsessed with pleasing others, making lots of money, getting a bigger house, or living out selfish desires that probably have nothing to do with God. They twist the word of God and use it out of context for their own selfish fulfillment. They take verses like John 10:10 to believe that God will give them a rich, abundant, and satisfying life here on earth (when the scripture is really referring Eternal life!). They are also victims of the ‘prosperity gospel.’ I used to be this way not too long ago, so I know what it feels like.
‘Christians’ like this are just living in the moment. Here, ‘living in the moment’ means being more focused on our earthly lives than on our eternity. They haven’t grasped the bigger picture: glorifying God with our life and our calling while bringing unsaved souls to Him so we can share in His eternal promise. This should be one of our main desires while living in this world. We should desire more and more of God each day, to to His will, to serve Him, and to gain more wisdom.
As Paul says in Philippians 3:18-19, those who want for earthly pleasures more than they desire God are enemies of Christ! So-called ‘Christians’ think they worship God because they love Him, but they really just want His blessings instead. It’s like calling a parent only when you need money and not because you want to spend time with him. Please don’t treat God like that! He is not your genie! He is our Savior, Provider, your Joy, our reason for living…He is our everything!
A true believer in Christ should not want anything more in this world than The Lord, to share Jesus with others, especially through their gifts, and anticipate the Kingdom of God. Jesus is coming back more sooner than later and we cannot afford to keep living in the moment. We have to press on toward doing what God called us to do in this lifetime, but with the true love of Christ in our hearts (because without love, our actions mean absolutely nothing [1 Corinthians 13:2]).
It’s time for us to stop being so driven by materialistic gain, and concerned about the things of this fallen world. It’s time to look at the bigger picture, live fully for God with our mind, body, and spirit and determine His will for our lives (Romans 12:1-2).
I encourage you to get alone with God every day, read the Bible, and talk with Him–either through prayer, songs, or worship–and He will reveal Himself and His will to you.
** I pray in Jesus name that this truth becomes so real to you that all you desire is to do the will of God and live with Him eternally. If you’re not saved, or not sure about your salvation, please look at the verses below:
“If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.” ~Romans 10:9-10
